WhatsApp Update or Add-on SMS Scam Targeting South African Mobile Users

If you have received the message: “You have not updated to the latest WhatsApp Add-ons. Click here now,” please do not follow the instructions in it. The message is a scam created to trick mobile users into unknowingly signing up for a service that will charge them a monthly fee. Please delete the message if you have received it or report it to your mobile provider if you are a victim.

If the link in the message is clicked, it will take you to the following website:
The website will mislead potential victims into clicking on the “Continue” without reading the fine print, thinking they are upgrading WhatsApp or installing an Add-on. But, what they are actually doing is signing up for a premium Social Networking service and agreeing to pay R7 (South African dollar) per day.
Here is the fine print:
Buddiechat is a social network with premium features such as mobile downloads, dating, image rating, creating and sharing.
The charges or fees will show up on the victims’ monthly mobile bills.
If you are a victim of the WhatsApp scam, please report it to your mobile service provider immediately.
Never click on a link or button to update your WhatsApp. WhatsApp will update itself automatically on most or all devices. But, if you want to update it manually, you may follow the instructions below:
How to update WhatsApp Manually
Go to Options
Go to Settings
Go to About
Go to Options again
Click Check for upgrade
Follow the instructions on your screen to update WhatsApp.
