"This is from Deputy Jones at NY State Police Department, you need to go immediately to the nearest police station or call Officer John Harris who is working with Federal Crime Enforcement. You have a federal complaint filed in your name. Call him at 646-934-8432. I repeat 646-934-8432. And have a blessed day."

How the Scam Works

  • Someone pretending to be from the Sheriff's Department or a law enforcement officer will call you by name and verify your address. We do not know how the scammers were able to obtain their potential victims' information, but we are assuming that their potential victims were tricked into sending their information using some form of phishing scam.

  • The caller will then tell you that their is a federal complaint filed in your name and attempt to trick you into sending money.

If you receive any phone calls about paying a fine, please call the relevant authorizes for information. Do not panic and hastily go and hand over your hard-earned money to scammers, simply because the caller knows your name, address and other information.
