Beware of Fake and Virus National Bank of Canada Email - "Notice of Payment"

The fake National Bank of Canada email message below with the subject: "Notice of payment," has a malicious attachment that will infect your computer with a virus or Trojan horse if you attempt open it. The message was designed to trick the recipients into opening the malicious attachment by claiming that they can view and print their notice of payment.

The Fake and Virus Email Message

Subject: Notice of payment
ttachment: -> payment_notice.scr

You can view and print the notice of payment using the Netscape or Microsoft Explorer browsers, versions 6.2 and 5.5. You can export and store the notice of payment data in your spreadsheet by choosing the attached file in pdf format ".pdf".

The email message has the file attached, which contains the malicious file payment_notice.scr.

If the recipients' computers get infected with a virus or Trojan horse, the cybercriminals behind this email message will be able to access and take control of their computers remotely from anywhere around the world. They may spy on them, use their computers to commit cybercrimes, or steal their personal and financial information.

National Bank has published the following information to educate their customers about phishing email scams:

A phishing scam involving fraudulent e-mails is currently underway. The messages ask recipients to click on a link to update their personal information. Be careful and do not click on the link or provide the information requested under any circumstances. National Bank never uses e-mail to ask for your personal information (social insurance number, password, etc.).

If you received such an e-mail and did not click on the link, we recommend that you delete it.

If you are a Bank client who received such an e-mail and unfortunately provided the information requested, please contact one of our TelNat customer service representatives as soon as possible (1-888-4TELNAT or 514-394-5555) for assistance.

If you received such a message and are a client of another financial institution, please contact your institution’s customer service department.

Now, if you have already opened the malicious attachment, please do a full scan of your computer with the antivirus software installed on it. The name of the attachment may change, so be careful when opening email attachments.
