How the ConnectWise Scam Works

• Fake Technical Support: Scammers cold-call you or trigger malicious browser pop-ups claiming your computer is infected. They pretend to be from major tech brands like Microsoft or Apple and direct you to download ConnectWise (often under its product name, ScreenConnect or ConnectWise Control) to "fix" the issue.
• Phishing Invitations: Attackers send deceptive emails containing malicious links disguised as routine business communications, such as fake Zoom or Microsoft Teams calendar invites. Clicking the link triggers a background download of a pre-configured ConnectWise client.
• Malicious Remote Control: Once the program is installed or a connection code is provided, the scammer gains administrative access to your device. They can view your screen, track your keystrokes, steal stored passwords, and download malware.

Actions If You Were Scammed

If you already permitted someone to access your computer using this software, take these protective steps immediately:

1. Disconnect the Internet: Turn off your Wi-Fi or unplug your Ethernet cable to instantly cut off the scammer's active remote connection.
2. Uninstall the Software: Open your device's settings, locate your applications list, and completely uninstall ConnectWise, ScreenConnect, or ConnectWise Control.
3. Change All Passwords: Use a separate, secure device to update the passwords for your online banking, email accounts, and major digital profiles.
