FBI and DHS Warn that ISIS Is Using Social Media to Target US Military Personnel

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are warning former and current United States military personnel to protect themselves and their families from a potential attack by the terrorist group called ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) on U.S. soil. The military is urging all military personnel to remove all information from their social media accounts that could help "violent extremists" learn their identities and target them and their families.

The FBI and DHS say they have intelligence that ISIS is trying to recruit people in the United States to track and carry out attacks on members of the military, by using the information that military members have posted on social networking websites.

As America continues to target ISIS positions in Syria and Iraq, Homeland Security officials are increasingly concerned about reprisal attacks on US soil, after two young men claiming to be inspired by ISIS, killed two uniformed Canadian soldiers in Ottawa, Canada last month.

The following federal bulletin was sent to law enforcement agencies by the FBI and DHS warning former and current military personnel to exercise operational security in their interactions online:

"The FBI and DHS recommend that current and former members of the military review their online social media accounts for any information that might serve to attract the attention of ISIL [ISIS] and its supporters."
