Malicious Microsoft Windows 10 Free Upgrade Emails

Cyber-criminals are taking advantage of the release of Microsoft's new operating system called Windows 10 released on July 29, 2015 that offers a free upgrade for computers running Windows 7 and 8, by sending out fake Windows 10 free upgrade email messages(see one below) with a malicious computer program called a ransomware attached, to infect their victims' computers. If the recipients of the emails open the attachment, their computers will get infected with the ransomware, which will lock their computers or encrypt their documents, photos and other important files. The ransomware will then demand that a ransom be paid before the victims can access or unlock their computers or documents.

It is important to remember that Microsoft and other software manufacturers will never send an update or upgrade as an email attachment. So, recipients of those email messages , which claim that an update or upgrade is attached, should delete them. And, remember never click on a link to upgrade to Windows 10.

Computers running Microsoft Windows 7 and 8 will receive their free upgrade to Windows 10 automatically through Windows Update.

The ransomware being sent in the fake Microsoft Windows 10 free upgrade email, is similar to the CITADEL ransomware that was used to infect millions of computers worldwide a few weeks ago.
