086 Scam Calls Demanding Payment

The Department of Social Protection and the Gardai have issued warnings about 086 scam automated calls. People are getting scam calls from 086 numbers claiming their tax refund is due, their immediate payment of a tax bill is required, or legal actions will be taken against them unless they make payment over the phone via credit/debit card or bank transaction. But, Revenue never asks customers to provide personal information via telephone calls or text messages.

Therefore, recipients of phone calls from someone claiming to be from Revenue and has doubts about the authenticity of the caller, especially if the call is unexpected, should contact their Revenue Office, especially if the callers are demanding payment or requesting personal and financial information.

If you have received an 086 scam call, please share your experience in a comment below and include the telephone number the call came from.
