I received a similar one today from the same scammers but the name was Charles Lucas. Thank you for the information. I have cancelled the request on PayPal and will now report it to them and to the FTC.

Received the same email/scam. The email is REAL and is REALLY FROM PAYPAL, but is just a request for money. It reads like they will deduct your account if you don't act within 24 hours. Webroot is a real company. I believe the scammers are pretending to be Webroot. I logged into my PP account directly, and confirmed it was a real request for money. I was able to CANCEL it, and then I forwarded the email to Phishing@paypal.com, AND reported it to the FTC.

If this happens to you, do NOT call the number provided. They'll pretend to be Paypal and steal your information. Cancel the request, fw the email to paypal, AND REPORT it to the FTC here: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov.

ORIGINAL EMAIL READS: (I removed my name, the transaction ID and any other numbers which may/may not make me susceptible to hacking...)

I had one too from Annette Johnson. I contacted PyPal customer services through my account - not the number stated in the email and the response I got back from them was as follows:

I know it can be concerning to receive an invoice from a Merchant you don't even recognize. At the same time, I can confirm that this is just a request and NO MONEY MOVEMENT IS INVOLVED. One thing I can assure you is that YOUR ACCOUNT WAS NOT COMPROMISED. Actually, sending you this kind of request only requires an email address which they may have taken somewhere else. HERE IN PAYPAL WE VALUE YOUR SECURITY and that's why money movements in our platform are user initiated. As long as you don't initiate a payment, this invoice is no good. Please do not click on any links or call the number and just forward the email notification to phishing@paypal.com as PayPal is working on deleting invoices that were created by bad actors.

Now, let me guide you with the steps to cancel this invoice from your end.

Here’s how to cancel a money request or invoice:

    1. Log in to your PayPal account.

    2. Click Activity at the top of the page.

    3. Click Cancel next to invoice you want to cancel.

    4. Click Yes to complete the cancellation.

In some cases, invoices can't be cancelled. Instead, we ask that you simply disregard the invoice and forward the email you received to phishing@paypal.com as PayPal is working on deleting invoices that were created by bad actors.

I have received an email requesting a payment by Tamara Boyd from webroot. Went onto my PayPal and it was there. Request has now been cancelled, but I'm sure there will be folks out there who will be tricked into ringing a number they provide on the email!

I received this message recently and when I logged into my Paypal account the request was actually there, so the scammers seem to have taken it one step further and actually created a real Paypal money request. I canceled it and moved on but have now just had another one so it's a growing problem by the look of it.
