Florida FLHSMV DMV Text Scam

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is warning drivers about a recent text message scam targeting residents of Florida. The scam claims the recipient has an unpaid traffic ticket and threatens to suspend their driver's license and vehicle registration if payment is not made immediately through a fraudulent link. But, FLHSMV will never contact you via text message demanding payment or threatening suspension or arrest.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has received reports of the scam across the state. While the full extent of the scam is unknown, the threat is serious.

Our records indicate that as of today, you still have an outstanding traffic ticket. Pursuant to Florida

Administrative Code 16C-16.003, if you fail to pay within 24 hours, we will take the following actions:

1. Report to the DMV violation database

2. Suspend your vehicle registration effective October 11th

3. Suspend your driving privileges for 30 days

4. Proceed to the toll booth and pay a 35% service fee

5. You may be prosecuted, and your credit score will be affected

How to Identify the Scam

  • Unsolicited Links: The FLHSMV (Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles) will never send texts with payment links.
  • Threatening Language: Scammers use urgency, mentioning license suspension, prosecution, or credit score impacts.
  • Fake Citations: Texts might cite non-existent laws, like "Florida Code 15C-16.003".
  • Suspicious URLs: Look for non-.gov domains or weird characters in links.

What to Do If You Get One

  • DO NOT Click Links: Clicking can install malware or lead to fake sites.
  • DO NOT Reply or Call: Don't provide any personal or financial details.
  • Delete the Message: Get rid of it immediately.
  • Report It: File a complaint with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), IC3 (Internet Crime Complaint Center), or your mobile provider.
  • Verify Independently: If you think you might owe something, go directly to the official myFloridaDMV portal or contact the agency through official channels.
