Tax Resolution Scam Calls

Tax Resolution Scam Calls

Tax resolution scam calls are fraudulent, unsolicited calls claiming to be from the IRS or a "tax relief" firm, often threatening immediate arrest or penalties to steal money. The IRS always contacts taxpayers by mail first, never by phone, for initial issues. Hang up immediately; do not provide personal information, and report them to TIGTA.

Scam Tactics

  • Urgency & Threats: Claiming a warrant for your arrest will be issued, or that you face deportation or license revocation if you do not pay immediately.
  • Spoofed Caller ID: Scammers use technology to make the call appear to be from the IRS, local sheriff’s offices, or other government agencies.
  • "Tax Relief" Offers: These services promise to reduce your debt for a large upfront fee, which is often a sign of a scam.
  • Payment Methods: Fraudsters often demand payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
  • AI Deepfakes: Scammers are using AI-driven voice technology to make calls sound more realistic and high-pressure.

Protect Yourself

  • Hang Up: If you receive an unexpected call claiming to be from the IRS, it is a scam.
  • Verify Independently: If you think you might owe taxes, contact the IRS directly at IRS.gov, not the number provided by the caller.
  • Report the Call: Report these calls to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1-800-366-4484 or on their website.
  • Do Not Engage: Avoid speaking to the caller or confirming any personal information, as they will try to pull you into the scam.
