Gainrep is widely reported as a phishing and spam scam that disguises itself as a professional networking or recommendation platform. It leverages trust by sending emails that appear to come from friends or colleagues, tricking users into connecting their Google accounts.
How it Works
Once you sign up or connect via Google, Gainrep automatically accesses your entire contact list and sends spam invitation emails to them, often without clear consent. The goal appears to be data harvesting, gaining access to your professional/personal contacts, and spreading further to increase their user base through spam. Emails often look like legitimate, personal, or urgent requests for professional recommendations or networking connections.
If you receive an email from Gainrep, do not click any links, do not sign up, and mark the message as spam.
If You Already Signed Up
- Go directly to gainrep.com (not through the email link).
- Navigate to connections, find the queued emails, and delete them to prevent further spamming of your contacts.
- Within settings, delete your account, ensuring you follow any instructions to permanently remove your data.
- Go to your Google account security settings ("Third-party apps & services") and remove access for "Gainrep".
- Consider changing your email password as a precaution.
Many users have reported high levels of frustration due to their personal contacts being spammed after falling for this, with some noting that the emails continue for a period even after attempting to stop the service.
