Scam Tactics

• Urgency and Threats: They claim your account has "growing penalties" or mention "escalated enforcement" to scare you into a quick response.
• Unsolicited Contact: They reach out via phone, text, or voicemail without any prior written notice from the IRS.
• Requests for Sensitive Data: The goal is often to steal your Social Security number, banking details, or direct payments via untraceable methods like gift cards or wire transfers.
• False Promises: They may offer "guaranteed" penalty abatement or massive debt reduction through programs like the "New Start Initiative".

Protect Yourself

1. Hang Up Immediately: Do not engage, press any buttons, or provide personal information.
2. Verify via Official Channels: If you are concerned about your tax status, contact the IRS directly or call their official line at 1-800-829-1040.
3. Know IRS Protocol: The IRS always sends a letter in the mail before calling. They will never demand immediate payment over the phone using gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
4. Check for Warnings: The SEC has blacklisted entities like "United Tax Consulting Limited" for being unregistered and high-risk.

Reporting the Scam

• TIGTA: Report the impersonation attempt to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration or call 1-800-366-4484.
• IRS Phishing: Forward the caller ID or details of the scam to phishing@irs.gov with the subject "IRS Phone Scam".
• FTC: File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
