Red Flags

  • The Name "DMV": Georgia does not have a "Department of Motor Vehicles" (DMV). The official agency is the Department of Driver Services (DDS).
  • Urgent Threats: Messages often use high-pressure language, threatening immediate license suspension, arrest warrants, or damage to your credit score if you don't pay within hours.
  • Fake Citations: The text may cite a made-up "State Administrative Code 15C-16.003" to sound official.
  • Suspicious Links: They include a link to a fake website that may look realistic but is designed to steal your credit card and Social Security number.
  • Method of Contact: The DDS never requests payment or personal information through unsolicited text messages. Official notifications regarding license status are sent via U.S. Mail.

If You Receive the Text

  1. Do Not Click: Never click links or scan QR codes in unsolicited texts.
  2. Delete and Block: Do not respond to the message; delete it immediately and block the sender.
  3. Verify Directly: If you are concerned about your license status, check it only through the official Georgia DDS Online Services or their secure portal at dds.drives.ga.gov.
  4. Report the Scam:
