Details of Scam

  • Message Content: The texts often read as a "final notice" for unpaid traffic tickets or tolls, demanding immediate payment via a provided link.
  • Threats Used: Messages may threaten a 30-day driving privilege suspension, vehicle registration suspension, or negative impact on credit scores.
  • Goal: These are "smishing" (SMS phishing) attacks designed to steal credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, or driver's license details.
  • Verification: The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and TxTag will not ask for sensitive information or payments through unsolicited text messages.

Protect Yourself

  • Do Not Click: Never click on links in unexpected text messages.
  • Verify Independently: If you believe you have a violation, go directly to the official txdmv.gov or txtag.org website to check your records, or call them directly.
  • Report the Scam: Forward the suspicious text to 7726 (SPAM), report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at.
