Winter Fuel Allowance Scam Text

Winter Fuel Allowance Scam Text

Fraudsters are sending fake Winter Fuel Allowance text messages claiming recipients must apply or lose their stipend, aiming to steal personal/banking information via malicious links. These are scams. The government pays this benefit automatically; they never ask for bank details by text. Delete the text, do not click links, and report it.

How the Scam Works

  • The Message: Fraudsters send texts pretending to be from the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) or HMRC. They often claim you haven't "applied" or need to "confirm details" to receive a payment of £200 or £300.
  • The Link: The text includes a link to a fake government website designed to steal your bank details and personal information.
  • The Tactic: Scammers use urgency, set tight deadlines, or even ask for a small "verification fee" (e.g., £1) to pressure you into acting quickly.

Can Ignore It

  • Automatic Payment: Most eligible people receive the payment automatically. You do not need to apply by text.
  • Official Contact: If you are eligible, the UK Government will typically send you an official letter in October or November, not a text.

Received a Text

  1. Do Not Click: Never click on links in unsolicited texts or share any personal/financial details.
  2. Report It: Forward the suspicious text message to 7726 (a free service for reporting scams).
  3. Delete: Once reported, delete the message immediately.
  4. If You've Been Scammed: Contact your bank immediately using the secure 159 hotline if available, and report it to Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040.
