PA DMV Text Scam Message

PA DMV Text Scam Message

Scammers are sending fake text messages pretending to be the "PA DMV" or "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania" regarding unpaid traffic tickets or toll violations to steal personal information. PennDOT does not send text messages about fines or traffic violations, and these messages are scams. Do not click links, do not pay, and delete them immediately.

How to Identify the Scam

  • Urgent Tone: Threatens license suspension, penalties, or higher fines to create panic.
  • Fake Entity: Uses names like "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Motor Vehicles".
  • Suspicious Links: Often directs to a website meant to steal credit card numbers, SSNs, and personal data.

Received a Scam

  • Do Not Click Links: Clicking can install malware or lead to phishing sites.
  • Delete and Block: Block the sender and delete the text.
  • Report the Scam: Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Verify Independently: If you are worried you have an actual fine, check the official PennDOT website directly, not through the link in the text.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of this scam should report it to the PA Office of Attorney General by calling 1-800-441-2555 or via their online complaint form.
