ICBC Text Scam Message

ICBC Text Scam Message

A widespread ICBC text scam is targeting drivers with fake messages claiming they have outstanding fines or traffic violations, urging them to click a link to pay. These are fraudulent. ICBC does not send text messages about debt or fines. Delete these messages immediately, do not click the links, and never provide personal or financial information.

How the Scam Works

  • The Message: You receive a text about an "unresolved traffic fine" or an "unpaid violation ticket".
  • The Threat: It often warns that if you don't pay immediately, your driver's license or vehicle registration renewal could be denied or restricted.
  • The Phishing Link: The text includes a link (e.g., to a fake "PayBC" portal) designed to steal your personal and financial information.
  • Sophistication: Modern versions may use AI to avoid spelling errors and appear highly professional.

Red Flags

  • The Sender: Messages often come from random 10-digit mobile numbers or international codes (like +63 or +212) rather than a verified business ID.
  • Urgency: Scammers use high-pressure tactics and short deadlines to force quick action.
  • The URL: Links often look suspicious (e.g., icbc.com-cabnb.my) instead of the official icbc.com website.

What To Do

  1. Do Not Click: Avoid clicking any links or downloading attachments in the message.
  2. Delete Immediately: The safest action is to delete the text without responding.
  3. Verify Manually: If you are concerned about a real fine, contact ICBC directly through their official website or by calling 1-800-665-6442.
  4. Report It: You can report the fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or your local police.
