Text messages claiming you owe money for traffic tickets, often citing RCW 46.63 or unpaid tolls, are a widespread scam. Scammers, pretending to be from a "Washington DMV" (which does not exist, it is the Department of Licensing) or toll agencies, send fraudulent links to steal personal and financial information.

Identify the Scam

  • Fake Agency Name: The text claims to be from the Washington "DMV." Washington State has a Department of Licensing (DOL), not a DMV.
  • Urgent Payment Links: The message threatens immediate penalties, such as suspended licenses or penalties, and provides a link for payment.
  • Suspicious Website URL: Links often look suspicious, such as "govpcnsqd.live" or other non-government sites.
  • Poor Grammar/Spelling: The messages often contain errors.

What to Do

  • DO NOT CLICK on the links in the text messages.
  • Verify Independently: If you have concerns about a ticket, check your license status directly through the official DOL website or contact the local court.
  • Report & Delete: Forward the spam text to 7726 and report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
  • The Washington State DOL or courts will not ask for payment via text message.
  • Legitimate Washington toll issues are handled by WSDOT through MyGoodToGo.com.
  • RCW 46.63 is a real statute, but it is being used to add a veneer of authenticity to this fraud.
