646 Area Code Scam Calls and Texts

While the 646 area code is a legitimate overlay for Manhattan, New York City, it is frequently used by scammers through caller ID spoofing to make calls appear domestic and trustworthy.

Common Scams

  • "One-Ring" or "Ring and Run" Scam: The phone rings once and then stops. Scammers hope you will call back, which can connect you to international premium-rate numbers resulting in high per-minute charges on your bill.
  • "Wrong Number" / Pig Butchering: You receive a text like "Hello, how are you?" or "Is this [Name]?" designed to start a conversation. Once you reply, they attempt to build a fake friendship to eventually pitch fraudulent cryptocurrency or investment schemes.
  • Impersonation Scams: Callers may claim to be from government agencies (IRS, FBI), banks, or tech support to steal personal information or demand immediate payment.
  • Smishing (Text Phishing): SMS messages claiming your account is "at risk" or offering fake jobs, often including a malicious link to steal credentials.

Warning Signs

  • Urgency & Pressure: Using "scare tactics" or demanding immediate action to prevent "irreversible charges".
  • Unknown Senders: Receiving out-of-the-blue messages or calls from a number not in your contacts.
  • Request for Info/Money: Any request for Social Security numbers, bank details, or payment via gift cards or wire transfers.
  • Poor Grammar: Professional organizations rarely send messages with frequent spelling or formatting errors.

Protect Yourself

  • Do Not Answer or Reply: Let unknown 646 calls go to voicemail; if it's legitimate, they will leave a message. Replying to a text confirms your number is active, leading to more spam.
  • Block and Report: Use your phone’s "Report Junk" feature and block the number immediately.
  • Verify Independently: If a caller claims to be from a business or agency, hang up and call the official number from their website.
  • Use Security Tools: Consider apps like AT&T ActiveArmor or the ScamShield app to help identify and block fraudulent calls.
  • Register Your Number: Add your phone to the National Do Not Call Registry to reduce telemarketing calls.
  • Report Scams: File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
