WA DOL Text Scam Messages

WA DOL Text Scam Messages

The Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) text scam is a phishing campaign where scammers send fake text messages alleging unpaid traffic tickets or suspended licenses to steal money and personal data. The WA DOL never sends texts requesting immediate payment or personal information. Do not click links; delete the message immediately.

Identify the Scam

  • Urgency/Threats: Messages threaten suspension of license, fines, or legal action to rush you into paying.
  • Fake "DMV" Name: Scammers often use "Washington DMV," but the agency is officially named the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL).
  • Suspicious Links: Links often do not lead to a .gov website.
  • Incorrect Information: The messages often claim you have traffic tickets, but the WA DOL does not handle traffic fines.
  • International Numbers: Messages may come from foreign area codes.

Received a Scam?

  • Do Not Click: Avoid clicking any links or providing personal/financial information.
  • Delete & Report: Delete the message and report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
  • Verify Independently: If you are worried you may actually have a fine, check directly through the official WA License Express website or contact local law enforcement, not through the link in the text.
  • If You Paid: If you already clicked the link or provided information, contact your bank immediately.
