Social Security Scam Emails

Social Security scam emails often impersonate the SSA, claiming your statement is ready or that your account is suspended to steal personal information. Red flags include urgent, threatening language, attachments, and non-“.gov” sender addresses. Do not click links or open attachments. Report these phishing attempts to the OIG website.

How to Spot and Avoid Scams

  • False Urgency: Messages demanding immediate action to avoid suspension of your Social Security number or benefits.
  • Suspicious Links/Attachments: Emails asking you to download a "statement" or click a link to log in. These can install malware or lead to fake websites.
  • Fake Sender Address: The email address does not end with ".gov," even if it uses official SSA logos and language.
  • Requests for Money/Info: The SSA will never request payment via wire transfer, gift cards, or cash, nor will they ask for sensitive personal information via email.

What to Do If You Receive a Scam

  • Do Not Respond: Delete the email immediately.
  • Verify Independently: If you think there is an actual issue, log in directly at ssa.gov.
  • Report It: File a complaint with the SSA Office of the Inspector General, the Federal Trade Commission, and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.

If You Provided Information

If you clicked a link or entered data, take immediate action:

  • Stop communicating with the scammers.
  • Contact your financial institutions to secure your accounts.
  • Monitor your credit reports for identity theft.
