Is the FTC Prime Subscription Settlement Fund a Scam?
Is the FTC Prime Subscription Settlement Fund a Scam?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) secured a historic $2.5 billion settlement with Amazon, resolving allegations that the e-commerce giant used deceptive "dark patterns" to trick millions of customers into Prime subscriptions and deliberately complicated the cancellation process. Of the total settlement amount, $1.5 billion is designated for consumer refunds, with eligible individuals receiving up to $51.

The initial claims deadline closed on July 27, 2026, and approved payments for that round are scheduled to be distributed by September 2026.

General Eligibility Requirements

You may have been eligible for a refund if you met the following criteria:

  • Location: You are a U.S.-based Amazon Prime customer.
  • Timeline: You signed up for Prime between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025.
  • Usage: You used fewer than three Prime benefits (such as Prime Video, Amazon Music, or free shipping) in any 12-month period after enrolling.
  • Cancellation Issues: You attempted to cancel your membership during this period but were blocked or hindered by Amazon’s multi-page online loop.

Refund Methods and Distribution

The $1.5 billion fund has been rolling out across multiple phases:

  • Automatic Payments: Millions of highly eligible, minimal-use accounts began receiving automatic refunds via PayPal, Venmo, or mailed checks starting in late 2025 and early 2026.
  • Claims Filing: A dedicated claims window opened on January 5, 2026, for customers who did not receive an automatic payment but believed they were trapped by the subscription flows. This filing portal closed on July 27, 2026.
  • Potential Second Round: If the full $1.5 billion is not entirely exhausted by the initial claims and automatic payouts, remaining funds may be distributed to a secondary pool of claimants who used their benefits more than three times.
