How the 866 Scam Work
Since toll-free numbers now begin with the prefix 866, many people are led to believe that the number is also toll-free, without realizing that the call actually dials to another country. Furthermore, since there is no international code in front of the number, no one knows they’re calling outside of the country. This is why the callers do not leave a voicemail because they want you to call them back at an international number that you will be charged for.
