Mcafee Subscription Scam - How to Protect Yourself

How the Scam Works

• The Panic Email/Text: You receive an urgent message stating that a large automatic renewal fee (often $300–$500) has been charged to your account.
• The Fake Customer Service Number: The message includes a "help desk" or "support" phone number to call if you want to cancel the subscription or dispute the charge.
• The Trap: If you call the number, scammers will try to gain remote access to your computer, steal your bank passwords, or demand payment in gift cards or cryptocurrency to "fix" the issue.

How to Spot a Fake McAfee Notification

• Check the Sender's Email Address: Genuine emails from McAfee will always come from an official domain like @mcafee.com. Scammers use lookalike domains or free accounts like Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook.
• Look for Generic Greetings: Scam emails often start with "Dear Customer" or "Hello User" instead of your actual name.
• Watch for Poor Grammar: Fake notices frequently contain spelling errors, awkward phrasing, and strange capitalizations.
• Sense of Extreme Urgency: They will pressure you to act immediately (e.g., "Within 24 hours") to avoid losing money or data.

What to Do If You Receive One

• Do Not Click Any Links: Do not click on buttons, links, or attachments in the message.
• Do Not Call the Provided Phone Number: Never use the contact details listed in a suspicious message.
• Check Your Official Account: Log in directly to your official profile on the McAfee Website to verify your actual subscription status and billing history.
• Check Your Bank Statements: Look at your actual bank or credit card accounts online. If you do not see a pending charge from McAfee, the email is completely fake.
• Report and Delete: Mark the email as spam or phishing in your inbox and delete it. You can also forward fake McAfee emails directly to spam@mcafee.com.

If you have already clicked a link, downloaded software, or given remote access to your computer, immediately disconnect your device from the internet, run a legitimate virus scan, and contact your bank to freeze your financial accounts.
