Geek Squad Renewal Scam Subscription Messages

The Geek Squad renewal scam is a prevalent phishing attack where scammers send fake emails or texts claiming an annual subscription renewal. The message urges you to call a fraudulent number to cancel, aiming to steal financial information, install malware, or trick you into paying via gift cards. Do not call the number provided in these messages.

How the Scam Works

  • Urgency & Fake Invoices: You receive a fake invoice via email/text, often alleging a large, immediate charge for "Geek Squad services".
  • The "Support" Hook: If you call, attackers act as support agents to "cancel" the charge.
  • Remote Access Trap: Scammers may ask for remote access to your computer to "process a refund," installing spyware to steal banking credentials.
  • Refund Fraud: They might claim to have refunded too much money and demand you repay them via gift cards or bank transfers.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Suspicious Sender Address: The email is not from a legitimate @bestbuy.com address.
  • Urgency: Demanding you take action within 24 hours to avoid a high charge.
  • Unusual Payment Methods: Requests for payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Ignore and Delete: Delete the email or text immediately.
  • Verify Directly: If you are unsure, check your account by logging in directly to BestBuy.com or call the Geek Squad phone number at 1-833-GEEK SQUAD.
  • Report Phishing: Forward scam emails to phishing@geeksquad.com or report them to the FTC.
  • If You Engaged: If you gave them remote access, disconnect from the internet, run a malware scan, and change your banking passwords immediately.
