There has been a significant rise in these scams beginning in early 2026. How the Scam WorksThe Lure: You receive an invitation via text or email for a generic event like a "Special Celebration of Life" or "Save the Date".The Trap: Clicking the "RSVP" or "View Invitation" link takes you to a fake login page that mimics services like Evite, Paperless Post, or Punchbowl. The Theft: If you enter your email and password, scammers gain control of your account. They may also use the link to silently install malware or remote access software on your device.Red FlagsSuspicious Sender Address: Official Evite emails only come from @evite.com. Text messages from a random 5-digit number or an unknown mobile number are highly suspicious.Forced Login: Real digital invitations typically do not require you to sign in or create an account just to view basic event details.Generic Language: Be wary of vague event titles like "Party" or "Event" that lack specific personal details.Urgency or Fees: Scammers often create a false sense of urgency or ask for payment to "unlock" the invitation. If You Received OneDo Not Click: If anything feels off, avoid clicking any links or buttons.Verify Directly: Call or text the person who supposedly sent the invite to confirm it’s real.Hover and Inspect: On a computer, hover your mouse over the link to see the real URL. If it doesn't lead to evite.com, it's a scam.Report and Block: Mark the message as phishing/spam in your email client or forward suspicious texts to 7726.If You Already ClickedChange Passwords: Immediately update the password for your email and any accounts that use the same credentials.Enable 2FA: Turn on two-factor authentication for an extra layer of security.
