Online Threat Alerts (OTA) - Alerting you to scams and frauds.
Fake QR code parking scams, known as "quishing," are a rapidly growing fraud technique across the UK. Criminals stick fraudulent QR code stickers directly onto real pay-and-display machines, street signage, or over legitimate QR codes. When a motorist scans the fake code, they are directed to a lookalike website designed to mimic major parking operators like RingGo or PayByPhone.
The scam operates by stealing personal data and banking information. Victims believe they are paying for a parking session, but the money goes straight to the fraudster—often resulting in automated, recurring monthly charges of £60 or more. Because no real parking session is ever booked, drivers also risk receiving an official penalty charge notice (PCN).
