How the Scam WorksThe Message: Fraudsters send texts pretending to be from the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) or HMRC. They often claim you haven't "applied" or need to "confirm details" to receive a payment of £200 or £300.The Link: The text includes a link to a fake government website designed to steal your bank details and personal information.The Tactic: Scammers use urgency, set tight deadlines, or even ask for a small "verification fee" (e.g., £1) to pressure you into acting quickly.Can Ignore ItAutomatic Payment: Most eligible people receive the payment automatically.
