BitPanda Scam SMS Text
BitPanda Scam SMS Text

The Bitpanda SMS scam (also known as "smishing") is a widespread phishing attempt where scammers impersonate Bitpanda to steal login credentials, two-factor authentication (2FA) codes, or cryptocurrency.

How the Scam Works

  • SMS Spoofing: Scammers fake the sender ID so the fraudulent message appears in the same chat thread as legitimate Bitpanda messages, making it look authentic.
  • Urgency & Fear: Messages often claim "suspicious activity," "account blocked," or "unauthorised login" to pressure you into acting quickly.
  • Fake Call Centres: Many scams provide a phone number (e.g., +43 19630044) and ask you to call to "secure" your account.
  • Third-Party Wallets: Scammers may instruct you to transfer your funds to a "secure" external wallet (like SafePal or Trust Wallet), which they actually control.

Warning Signs

  • Requests to Call: Bitpanda never asks you to call them via SMS and does not offer phone support.
  • Requests for Sensitive Info: Bitpanda will never ask for your password, 2FA codes, recovery seed phrases, or API keys.
  • Urgent Links: Official logins should only happen through the official app or the Bitpanda website.

Recommendations

  1. Enable Anti-Phishing Code: Set up a personalized code in your account settings. If this code is missing from an SMS or email, it is a scam.
  2. Ignore and Delete: If you receive a suspicious SMS, do not click any links or call any numbers. Forward it to 7726 (if supported by your carrier) to report it as spam.
  3. Verify through Official Channels: If you are worried about your account, contact Bitpanda directly through their official support form.
  4. Immediate Action if Compromised: If you have already shared data or lost funds, immediately lock your account and file a report with your local police.
