iPhone Scam Text Messages

iPhone scam texts often impersonate Apple or banks, using urgent, alarming language to trick users into clicking links for "account lockouts" or "unauthorized purchases". These, often called smishing (SMS phishing), aim to steal personal info or money via fake sites. NEVER click links, reply, or call numbers in these messages.

Key Actions to Take

  • Block & Report: Use the "Report Junk" button in iMessage to delete the message.
  • Report Phishing: Forward suspicious messages to 7726 (SPAM) and report them to Apple at reportphishing@apple.com.
  • Verify Directly: Never use the contact info in the text. Instead, check for legitimate issues directly on the Apple website or via Apple Support.
  • Filter Unknowns: Turn on "Filter Unknown Senders" in Settings > Messages to prevent notifications from scammers.
  • Stay Vigilant: Be aware that caller ID/sender names can be spoofed, making fake messages look like they come from "Apple".

Common iPhone Scams

  • Apple Pay/Account Alert: Messages stating your account is locked, suspended, or a suspicious payment was made.
  • Package Delivery Scams: Messages claiming a package cannot be delivered, urging you to pay a fee.
  • Fake Security Alerts: Notifications about phony "system security issues" or "malware" in iOS.

For comprehensive guidelines, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides extensive resources on recognizing and reporting phishing attempts.
