Geek Squad Scam Email Invoice - How to Protect Yourself

Neither Best Buy nor Geek Squad sent this email, and no money has been deducted from your account.

How the Scam Works

• The Fake Bill: You receive an email with a professional-looking PDF or inline invoice for a "Geek Squad Total Protection Plan" or "Tech annual subscription".
• The Bait: It claims your account has already been auto-renewed and successfully charged.
• The Hook (The Number): The invoice provides a customer service number to call within 24 hours if you wish to dispute or cancel the charge.
• The Trap: If you call, a scammer posing as a tech agent will try to secure remote access to your computer, steal your banking login credentials, or demand a "cancellation fee".

Key Red Flags to Look For

1. Mismatched Sender Address: The display name says "Geek Squad," but the actual email address is a public domain (like @gmail.com) or a strange, unofficial URL.
2. Generic Greeting: The message addresses you as "Dear User," "Dear Customer," or simply leaves your name out completely.
3. High Urgency: It states you must act within 24 to 48 hours before the funds are permanently cleared.
4. Legitimate Platforms Abused: Scammers frequently send these fake invoices using the servers of legitimate business platforms like PayPal, Housecall Pro, or Razorpay to successfully bypass your email spam filters.

Immediate Steps to Take

• Received Email Do NOT call the number - Mark it as Spam - Delete
• Do not call the phone number listed in the email.
• Do not click any payment buttons, links, or open any attached files.
• Mark the email as spam or phishing within your email client and delete it right away.
• Check your actual bank accounts via your official banking app (not through links in the email) to confirm that no unauthorized transactions have occurred.
• Report the fraud by forwarding the email to Best Buy's official abuse channels or filing a report online at the FTC Fraud Report Portal.
