Geek Squad Subscription Scam - How to Protect Yourself

How the Scam Works

Scammers rely on a psychological trick called callback phishing to bypass email security and exploit human panic:

1. The Fake Invoice: You receive an email or text containing a professional-looking invoice with a Best Buy logo. It claims your "Geek Squad Total Tech Support" subscription has automatically renewed for $300 to $500.
2. The Panic Trap: The email creates an artificial sense of urgency, stating you will be charged within 24 hours unless you call the provided "customer service" number to cancel.
3. The Remote Access Trick: If you call the number, a scammer pretending to be an agent will claim they can issue a refund. However, they will demand you download a remote desktop app (like AnyDesk or TeamViewer) to "process" it.
4. The Overpayment Scam: Once on your computer, they ask you to log into your bank account. They will manipulate your screen or edit the website code to make it look like they accidentally refunded you too much money (e.g., $3,000 instead of $300). They then demand you send the "difference" back via gift cards, wire transfers, Zelle, or cryptocurrency.

Red Flags to Spot the Scam

• Sender Address: The email display name says "Geek Squad," but the actual email address is a random public domain like @gmail.com or @outlook.com.
• Generic Greeting: Legitimate companies address you by name. These emails say "Dear Customer" or have no greeting at all.
• Poor Grammar: Watch for odd formatting, strange spacing, or spelling mistakes.
• Demands for Callbacks: Real companies allow you to manage subscriptions inside an online portal. They do not force you to call an unverified 1-800 number to stop a charge.
• Use of the Word "Kindly": Scammers highly over-use the word "kindly" (e.g., "Kindly call our support desk"), which is rarely used in standard corporate communication.

What to Do Next

• Do NOT call the number or click any buttons or links inside the email.
• Check your actual bank accounts using your regular banking app to confirm no such money has left your account.
• Mark the email as spam or phishing and permanently delete it.
• Go directly to the official site at BestBuy.com if you want to verify your actual subscription status. Never use the phone numbers listed in the email.
