Bitdefender Scams - How to Protect Yourself
Bitdefender Scams - How to Protect Yourself

Bitdefender-related scams generally fall into two categories: phishing emails impersonating the company (such as fake subscription renewals) and general tech support scams where fraudsters pretend to be Bitdefender representatives.

Fake Subscription Renewal Emails

Scammers frequently send fraudulent emails claiming your Bitdefender plan has been automatically renewed for several years with a massive, unauthorized charge.

  • The Tactic: The email includes a fake "support" phone number and urges you to call to cancel the renewal or get a refund.
  • The Goal: Scammers pressure you to provide payment details or grant them remote access to your computer to "process the refund."
  • How to Verify: Bitdefender will never notify you of a security issue via pop-up or cold-call. Only check your subscription status securely by logging into your Bitdefender Central account.

Tech Support Scams

Fraudsters use fake pop-up browser warnings or cold calls claiming your device is heavily infected with malware.

  • The Tactic: They trick you into believing that buying their "premium support service" or downloading a specific software is the only way to fix your computer.
  • The Reality: Legitimate cybersecurity companies like Bitdefender do not push urgent, aggressive warnings on websites or demand phone calls to unlock your system.

If You've Been Targeted

  • Do not call: Never reach out to the phone numbers provided in these suspicious emails or text messages.
  • Protect your device: Do not click on any links, download attachments, or grant unknown individuals remote access to your device.
  • Report and Delete: Report the email as a phishing attempt and delete it.
  • Contact the company directly: If you are unsure about your account, reach out to the company using the official Bitdefender Support page.
  • Freeze finances: If you have already provided your credit card or banking details, contact your financial institution immediately to initiate a chargeback and freeze your accounts.
