Is Moonpay a Scam or is it Legitimate?
Is Moonpay a Scam or is it Legitimate?

MoonPay itself is a legitimate, regulated cryptocurrency payment infrastructure, but scammers frequently use its name to exploit users through phishing attacks, fake job offers, and romance or investment scams. Because cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible, funds sent to scammers through MoonPay generally cannot be recovered.

The most common ways scammers use the MoonPay name include:

  • Phishing Emails: Scammers send fraudulent emails claiming your "MoonPay account needs verification" or demanding you reset your password. Clicking the links directs you to a fake website designed to steal your login credentials or wallet seed phrases.
  • Fake Job Offers: Criminals pose as remote employers and ask victims to buy cryptocurrency using MoonPay as part of a "training exercise" or to process payroll, ultimately stealing the funds.
  • Romance & Investment Scams: Scammers build trust with victims online, convincing them to purchase crypto via MoonPay and then send those funds to an external wallet address under the guise of guaranteed investment returns.

How to protect yourself

  • Never share keys or passwords: MoonPay will never ask for your password, one-time passcodes, or wallet private keys.
  • Verify contact channels: MoonPay will never contact you via phone, social media, or messaging apps to offer trading returns or ask for personal details.
  • Do not send crypto to strangers: If someone you met online asks you to buy and send cryptocurrency, it is almost certainly a scam.

What to do if you are a victim

  • Contact your bank: Immediately freeze the card or account used to make the purchase and inquire about a chargeback.
  • Report the scam: Submit details to MoonPay’s official Phishing Report Portal.
  • Check guides: Read the MoonPay Safety Guide for detailed steps on securing your personal information.
