Venmo Fraud Hotline Scam - How to Protect Yourself

The "Venmo Fraud Hotline" scam is a widespread phishing tactic where fraudsters impersonate Venmo's customer support to hijack your account or steal money.

How the Scam Works

  1. The Hook: You receive an automated call or text claiming there is "unauthorized activity" or a "password change" on your account.
  2. The Bait: The message instructs you to "press 1" or call a provided "hotline" number to cancel the transaction.
  3. The Hijack: Once you're on the line, the scammer triggers a One-Time Passcode (OTP) or verification code from Venmo's real system. They ask you to read this code back to them to "verify your identity".
  4. The Result: If you provide the code, the scammer gains full access to your account, changes the credentials, and drains your funds.

Venmo Contact Info

Never trust numbers from unsolicited texts or calls. Use these verified channels:

  • Official Phone: 855-812-4430 (Main Support).
  • In-App Chat: Navigate to Me > Settings > Get Help > Chat With Us.
  • Email for Phishing: Forward suspicious emails directly to phishing@venmo.com.

Warning Signs

  • Asking for Codes: A real Venmo agent will never ask for your password, PIN, or verification code over the phone.
  • Urgency: Scammers use high-pressure tactics to make you act before you think.
  • Phone Number Spoofing: Scammers can make their caller ID appear as "Venmo" or even spoof the official 855 support number.

If Targeted Do This

  1. Hang Up Immediately: Do not press any buttons or provide any information.
  2. Secure Your Account: Log in via the official Venmo App or Venmo.com to check for real notifications.
  3. Report the Fraud: Use the FTC Fraud Report Tool to document the incident
