ApplePay Scam Text - How to Protect Yourself
ApplePay Scam Text - How to Protect Yourself

Any text message you receive claiming your Apple Pay has been suspended or that an unauthorized charge has been made is a scam. Apple will never send you an unsolicited SMS text message to warn you of fraud, suspend your account, or ask you to call a support phone number.

Common Scenarios and Red Flags

Scammers are aggressively sending fake alerts using two primary tactics:

  • The "Suspended Account" Trap: The text reads "Apple Pay has been suspended on your device". It includes a malicious link to "reactivate" it, designed to steal your Apple Account credentials and credit card information.
  • The Fake Transaction Scare: The message claims a high-dollar purchase was made on your account. It demands you call a "dedicated support line" immediately to cancel it, creating a false sense of urgency so you panic.
  • The Remote Control Trick: If you call the number, fraudsters impersonating Apple Support will try to trick you into downloading apps (like ConnectWise or spyware) to gain remote control over your phone and drain your bank account.

What to Do Immediately

  • Do not click links or call numbers provided in the text message.
  • Verify independently: Open the built-in Apple Wallet app or your official banking app directly on your device to check your transaction history and account status.
  • Report the text: Take a screenshot of the message and email it to reportphishing@apple.com. You can also tap Report Junk inside the Messages app or forward the text to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Block the sender: Delete the text and block the number immediately.

What if You Already Engaged?

If you shared bank/card info: Call the phone number printed on the back of your physical payment card immediately to freeze your account.

  • If you provided account credentials: Change your Apple Account password from a trusted device right away.
  • If you downloaded an app: Delete it immediately, disconnect from the internet, and scan your device for spyware. Consider freezing your credit if you shared sensitive personal details like a Social Security or national identity number.
