Geek Squad Email Scam - How to Protect Yourself
Geek Squad Email Scam - How to Protect Yourself

The Geek Squad email scam is a widespread phishing fraud where cybercriminals impersonate Best Buy's tech support to steal your money, personal information, or gain control of your computer. If you received an email claiming you were charged hundreds of dollars for a subscription renewal (like "Secure Guard Plus" or an antivirus plan), it is fake and you do not owe anything.

How the Scam Works

  1. The Panic Invoice: You receive an authentic-looking email or PDF invoice stating that your "Geek Squad auto-renewal" has successfully processed for an amount typically between $300 and $600.
  2. The Fake Support Number: The email pressures you to act quickly, stating you must call a provided phone number within 24 hours if you wish to dispute or cancel the charge.
  3. The Phone Trap: If you call the number, a scammer pretending to be a representative will answer. They will ask you to download remote-access software to your computer to "process a refund". Once inside your system, they can steal banking credentials, plant malware, or fake an "overpayment refund" error and demand you buy gift cards to repay them.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Sender Address: The email is sent from a generic or unrelated domain (like a random @gmail.com address or an unrelated platform) rather than an official bestbuy.com domain.
  • Urgency & Threats: Demands that you call immediately or within 24 hours before the money is permanently gone.
  • No Links, Just a Number: Many modern campaigns don't include clickable links (to avoid email spam filters); instead, the phone number itself is the primary trap.
  • Grammar Errors: Massive capitalization issues, generic greetings (e.g., "Dear Customer"), and awkward phrasing.

What You Should Do Next

  • Do NOT call the number listed in the email.
  • Do NOT click any links or download any attachments.
  • Check your actual accounts: Log directly into your bank or your official Best Buy account via their legitimate website to see if any real charges exist.
  • Report it: Forward the email to Best Buy's official fraud department at abuse@bestbuy.com. You should also file a complaint with the FTC Report Fraud Portal.
