How the Scam Works

  • False Claims: Advertisements frequently claim the device stabilizes voltage, eliminates "dirty electricity," and can slash your power bill by up to 90% (or by 90%).
  • Invalid Technology: The plugs claim to correct "power factor." While this concept is real in large industrial settings, residential smart meters only charge for "real power" (kWh) consumed, not the reactive power these devices attempt to fix.
  • Empty or Fake Components: When torn down, these gadgets usually contain minimal circuitry (a single LED light and a basic capacitor) or are completely hollow, sometimes even filled with sand.
  • Deceptive Marketing: Scammers frequently use stolen video clips, fake customer reviews, and fabricated celebrity endorsements (like pretending Elon Musk invented or supports the product) to trick consumers.

Consumer Warnings

Experts consistently warn against buying these devices. Aside from being entirely ineffective, some safety organizations have noted that poorly manufactured plugs are not properly wired and carry real fire and explosion hazards. If you see these being heavily marketed across social media or in pop-up ads, it is best to avoid them entirely.
