Cashapp Scam Alert - How to Protect Yourself

Cash App will never call you to ask for a sign-in code, PIN, or personal information. If you have received an unexpected text, email, or phone call claiming to be from Cash App support, it is almost certainly a phishing attempt trying to compromise your account.

The most prevalent and dangerous Cash App scams targeting users right now fall into a few specific categories:

Critical Scams to Watch For

  • The "Password Change" Support Call (Number Spoofing): Scammers manipulate caller ID so it reads "Cash App". An automated system or live caller claims someone is trying to change your password or phone number. They text you a security code and pressure you to read it out loud. If you give them this code, they will immediately drain your account.
  • The "Business Account Upgrade" Lure: You receive a message saying a payment is "pending" or "held" because your account isn't a business account. They claim you must send them $100–$200 to "unlock" the larger payment. Real pending payments never require you to send money to unlock them.
  • The "Accidental" Payment Trap: A stranger sends you money out of nowhere and begs you to send it back. The original money they sent was from a stolen credit card or a hacked account. Once Cash App reverses the fraud, the money you sent back comes out of your own pocket.
  • Fake Giveaway/Bonus Schemes: Scammers post on social media claiming Cash App is handing out "$500 Anniversary Bonuses" or cash-flipping rewards. They provide a lookalike link that harvests your login credentials.

How to Verify and Protect Your Account

  • Check the In-App Activity Feed: The app is your only source of truth. If a payment, alert, or hold is real, it will show up directly under your Activity tab. If it isn't there, the text or email you got is fake.
  • Never Share Your Sign-In Code: Cash App texts contain a strict warning: "Do not share this with anyone." No legitimate employee will ever bypass this rule.
  • Turn on Security Lock: Go to your profile settings and require a PIN, Touch ID, or Face ID for every transfer.
  • Handle Mistaken Payments Through Support: If a stranger genuinely sends you money by mistake, use the official "Refund" button on that specific transaction instead of starting a brand new payment.

What to Do If You Were Already Scammed

  1. Report it Immediately: Open Cash App, go to your Activity feed, tap the fraudulent transaction, and select Report an Issue.
  2. Lock it Down: Change your Cash App PIN right away and contact your linked bank or credit card company to freeze unauthorized transfers.
  3. Contact Official Support: Reach out strictly through the app (Profile -> Support) or call the verified line at 1 (800) 969-1940. Do not search Google for support numbers, as fraudsters buy fake ad space to intercept those calls.
