Fedex Text Message Scam - How to Protect Yourself
Fedex Text Message Scam - How to Protect Yourself

The FedEx text message scam is a widespread SMS phishing ("smishing") attack where fraudsters impersonate FedEx to steal your personal or financial data. FedEx will never send unsolicited text messages demanding payment, delivery preferences, or personal information for a package.

If you receive an unexpected message about a delivery issue, it is a scam.

How the Scam Works

  1. The Bait: You get a text claiming a package cannot be delivered, has an incorrect address, or requires a "duty fee".
  2. The Link: The message contains a link to "update your preferences" or pay a nominal fee.
  3. The Trap: Clicking the link routes you to a fake website (often disguised as an Amazon survey or an official courier page). You are offered a "free prize" or asked to settle a small delivery charge, requiring your credit card info.
  4. The Theft: Scammers use your details to initiate fraudulent credit card charges or enroll you in expensive monthly subscription fees.

Key Red Flags to Watch For

  • Urgency: Demands immediate action to avoid your package being returned.
  • Sketchy Links: URLs containing domains like .shop or misspelled variations like fedx.com or fedcy.com.
  • Requests for Money: Asking for payment via text to release a shipment.
  • Grammar Issues: Poor sentence structures, spelling errors, or excessive exclamation points.
