Bank of America Gamestop Scam

The Bank of America GameStop scam is a phishing, smishing, or vishing (voice phishing) imposter scam where fraudsters pose as bank employees, claiming a fraudulent transaction occurred at GameStop. They use high-pressure tactics, asking victims to "verify" account details or transfer funds to "secure" their account, leading to direct financial theft.

Details of the Scam

  • Method: Victims receive a text, email, or call from a spoofed telephone number about a "declined" or "suspicious" charge at GameStop.
  • The Hook: A sense of urgent fear is created to force you into acting quickly without thinking.
  • The Theft: Scammers ask for personal information, one-time passwords, or instruct you to transfer money via Zelle to a "safe" account, which is actually the scammer's account.
  • Red Flags: The caller asks for sensitive info, uses high-pressure language, or asks you to move money.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Hang Up: Do not respond to unsolicited calls or texts, even if the Caller ID looks legit.
  • Verify Directly: Call Bank of America directly using the number on the back of your card, not the number provided in the alert.
