Scam Tactics

  • Urgency & Threats: Claiming a warrant for your arrest will be issued, or that you face deportation or license revocation if you do not pay immediately.
  • Spoofed Caller ID: Scammers use technology to make the call appear to be from the IRS, local sheriff’s offices, or other government agencies.
  • "Tax Relief" Offers: These services promise to reduce your debt for a large upfront fee, which is often a sign of a scam.
  • Payment Methods: Fraudsters often demand payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
  • AI Deepfakes: Scammers are using AI-driven voice technology to make calls sound more realistic and high-pressure.

Protect Yourself

  • Hang Up: If you receive an unexpected call claiming to be from the IRS, it is a scam.
  • Verify Independently: If you think you might owe taxes, contact the IRS directly at IRS.gov, not the number provided by the caller.
  • Report the Call: Report these calls to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1-800-366-4484 or on their website.
  • Do Not Engage: Avoid speaking to the caller or confirming any personal information, as they will try to pull you into the scam.

The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages, or social media to request personal or financial information.
