USPS Delivery Scam Text Message

A text message claiming to be from the USPS about a "failed delivery," "held package," or unpaid fee is a phishing scam designed to steal your money and personal data. The United States Postal Service does not send unsolicited texts or emails containing links.

If you receive one of these messages, follow these exact steps:

  • DO NOT CLICK: Never click the link, scan the QR code, or open any attachments in the text.
  • Verify Externally: If you are actually expecting a package, navigate directly to the official USPS Tracking website to check its status.
  • Delete and Block: Block the sender's phone number and delete the message immediately.
  • Report It: Forward the message to spam@uspis.gov (the U.S. Postal Inspection Service) with details about the scam. You can also file a report with the Federal Trade Commission.

Warning Signs of a Scam

  • Urgency: The text claims a package is on hold or requires a small "redelivery fee". This is a tactic to trick you into giving up your credit card details.
  • Suspicious Links: The URL provided in the text will not end in usps.com.
  • Unsolicited Contact: The USPS will never reach out via text to ask for personal or financial information.

If you made the mistake of clicking the link and entering sensitive information, immediately lock your credit cards, contact your bank, and change your passwords.
