Tax Consultants of America Voicemail Scam

The "Tax Consultants of America" voicemail is a widespread phishing scam designed to steal your personal and financial information. Scammers leave urgent, automated messages claiming you have back taxes, missed filings, or owe money, and pressure you to call back immediately to resolve the issue.

Warning Signs

  • IRS Protocol: The IRS and legitimate government agencies never initiate contact regarding debts via unsolicited phone calls or threatening voicemails. All official correspondence begins with postal mail.
  • High-Pressure Tactics: Scammers use urgent deadlines or threats of immediate legal action/arrest to panic you into acting without thinking.
  • Unverified Callbacks: They instruct you to call a specific phone number they provide rather than using official, published agency numbers.

Protect Yourself

  • Do Not Call Back: Returning the call confirms your number is active and alerts scammers that you are an easy target.
  • Never Share Information: Legitimate agencies already have your Social Security Number, banking details, and tax history. Never give sensitive data to unsolicited callers.
  • Block and Report: Block the caller's number immediately. You can report these fraudulent calls to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) TIGTA.gov.
  • Verify Directly: If you are genuinely concerned about your tax status, look up the official agency (such as the IRS or your state's tax authority) independently to check your account status.
