How the Scam Works

  • The Scare: You receive an SMS claiming an a payment request was made via Apple Pay.
  • The Trap: The message creates a false sense of urgency and gives you a fake customer service phone number contact to resolve the issue.
  • The Call: If you call, a fraudster impersonating Apple Support will ask for your Apple ID, password, credit card details, or two-factor authentication codes.
  • The Payoff: In some extreme variations, they may try to convince you that hackers have taken your money, forcing you to move your funds into Apple Cash or wire it to a "safe account".

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Urgent Demands: Messages pressuring you to act immediately to stop an auto-debit or account suspension.
  • Random Phone Numbers: Inclusion of an 888 or standard mobile number to call instead of directing you to an official application.
  • Poor Grammar: Minor typos, weird spacing, or strange punctuation (e.g., placing state abbreviations in unnecessary quotes).
  • Screen-Sharing Requests: The "agent" asking you to download a remote-access app (like ConnectWise or AnyDesk) to "fix" your phone.
