Universal Tax Associates Scam - How to Protect Yourself

Common Red Flags

• The IRS Never Calls First: The IRS does not initiate contact via phone calls or texts; they communicate almost exclusively through the U.S. mail.

• Demands for Unusual Payments: Scammers often demand payment via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or prepaid debit cards.

• Phishing Attempts: Messages containing links that urge you to "claim your refund online" or restore your account are designed to steal your Social Security number and financial data.

• Unscrupulous Preparers: Fake or dishonest tax preparers may invent income to qualify you for credits, take fees from refunds without your knowledge, or promise unnaturally large refunds.

If You Are Targeted

• Hang Up / Don't Click: Do not engage with the caller, and never click links in suspicious emails or text messages.

• Verify Directly: If you suspect you owe back taxes, contact the IRS directly at the official IRS Contact Page.

• Report the Scam: Forward suspicious IRS-related emails to phishing@irs.gov. You can also file a complaint through the Federal Trade Commission or report impersonation calls to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).
