This is because the fake messages are being sent by scammers who are attempting to steal their potential victims' money, financial, and personal information. This morning my wife and I BOTH received a text similar to this:
"FRM:AT&T
SUBJ:Unauthorized payment.Call 8782059684"
I had a strong hunch it was a scam and when I looked it up and found your site - that hunch was verified.
