The "Meta Verified" message scam is a widespread phishing campaign designed to hijack your social media accounts, steal personal information, and access linked credit cards. Scammers use Facebook Messenger or Instagram DMs to send frightening, urgent alerts disguised as official "Meta Announcements" to pressure you into acting without thinking.

How the Scam Works

  1. The Scare: You receive a direct message claiming your account has shown "unusual activity," has violated "copyright policies," or is "impersonating someone else."
  2. The Ultimatum: It threatens that your account will be permanently deleted within 24 hours unless you appeal.
  3. The Trap: The message directs you to open an attached file (like a malicious PDF) or click a link to a fake "Meta Support" login page.
  4. The Theft: If you enter your password or two-factor authentication (2FA) codes on that page, the scammers instantly steal them and lock you out of your account.

Dead Giveaways It’s a Scam

  • It arrived via chat: Meta will never contact you through a standard Messenger chat or Instagram DM about an account issue. Real enforcements appear in your official app notifications or the Meta Support Inbox.
  • Misspellings: Many of these variations use intentional typos like "Meta Verrified" (with two r's) to bypass security filters.
  • Extreme urgency: Giving you a "24-hour window" is a psychological manipulation tactic to make you panic.
  • Unusual links: The links provided point to sketchy, non-Meta URLs (e.g., policy-meta-help.com) rather than official domains like facebook.com or meta.com.

What to Do If You Get This Message

If you haven't clicked anything...If you did click or enter info...
• Do not click any links.
• Do not open any attachments.
• Tap the sender's profile, select Report, and choose "Scam" or "Impersonation."
• Block the sender and delete the chat.		• Immediately log into the official app and change your password.
• Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).
• Check your Meta Account Center to ensure your email/phone number haven't been changed.
• If you provided billing info, alert your bank immediately.
