Canada Post Scam Calls - How to Protect Yourself
Canada Post Scam Calls - How to Protect Yourself

Canada Post does not make unsolicited or automated robocalls to customers. If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from Canada Post regarding a missing package, an address error, or a parcel "held for inspection," it is an active phishing scam designed to steal your identity or banking information.

Common Canada Post Phone Scams

  • The "Held for Inspection" Robocall: An automated message claims a package cannot be delivered or is being held. It prompts you to "Press 1" for English or "Press 2" for another language (often Mandarin) to connect with a fake agent.
  • The Firearm / Illegal Package Trap: Scammers spoof caller ID numbers to look like Canada Post or local police. They claim an illegal package (like firearm parts) has been intercepted in your name and transfer you to a fake police officer to demand personal details or money.
  • Deepfake Voice Scams: Fraudsters use AI-generated voice technology to sound highly professional and pressure you to settle fake outstanding delivery fees or customs duties.

What Canada Post Actually Does

  • Physical Notices: If an agent attempts a delivery and you are not home, they will leave a physical Delivery Notice Card at your door or in your mailbox.
  • No Unsolicited Calls: Representatives will never call, text, or email you out of the blue unless you explicitly requested assistance or opened a customer service ticket beforehand.
  • No Financial Requests: They will never call you to ask for credit card information, bank details, dates of birth, or Social Insurance Numbers (SIN).

What to Do If You Get a Call

  1. Hang Up Immediately: Do not engage, ask questions, or press any numbers on your keypad.
  2. Verify Manually: If you are actually expecting a package, check its true status by typing your tracking number directly into the official Canada Post Tracking Tool.
  3. Report the Fraud: If you fell victim or gave up information, immediately freeze your accounts with your financial institution. You can report fraudulent attempts to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
