The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) has issued urgent warnings regarding a widespread text message scam targeting Georgia drivers. Scammers are sending fraudulent "smishing" (SMS phishing) messages to trick residents into providing personal information or money.
How the Scam Works
- The Message: You receive a text claiming you have an outstanding traffic ticket or an unpaid toll.
- The Threat: It often warns of immediate license suspension, vehicle registration issues, or legal action if you do not pay promptly.
- The Link: The message includes a link to a fraudulent website that mimics the official DDS site.
- Red Flag: Many of these texts claim to be from the "State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)"—but Georgia does not have a DMV; the official agency is the Department of Driver Services (DDS).
Official DDS Policy
- No Unsolicited Texts: DDS employees never contact customers via text, email, or social media to request payment or confidential information like Social Security numbers.
- Official Notifications: Any notice regarding license suspension or status changes is sent exclusively in writing via U.S. Mail.
